The Dornier Do-335 "Pfeil" was the fastest piston-engined aircraft of the German Air Force in World War II and also the only military aircraft of the time with a "pull-push" engine. It was also a robust and very maneuverable machine that could actually cope with a rear engine failure. It was one of the few aircraft of the time to be equipped with an ejection seat. If this had to be used, the canopy, rear propeller and upper tail fin were blown away with explosive bolts so that the pilot could not hit them during takeoff. Another unusual feature of this aircraft was the cruciform tail shape. It had a downward-facing fin fitted, hopefully to prevent any damage to the rear propeller that could occur in an awkward landing.
